external ist ein Wert für das Attribut rel, der 2006 in HTML5 hinzugefügt, 2011 aber wieder entfernt wurde.

Im Working-Draft vom 25. Mai 2011 wurde der Wert wie folgt spezifiziert:

The external keyword may be used with a and area elements. This keyword creates a hyperlink.

The external keyword indicates that the link is leading to a document that is not part of the site that the current document forms a part of.

Warum wurde er wieder aus der HTML5-Spezifikation entfernt?

Das lässt sich im Bug 11181 nachlesen. Die WG hat entschieden: It's unclear why this needs a link relation and also why it needs to be defined in the HTML specification. Sie erwähnt zwei Anwendungsfälle für external: anderes Styling (mit CSS) und Öffnen in neuen Fenstern (mit JavaScript). Für den ersten Fall wäre das class-Attribut ausreichend, für den zweiten Fall könne man ja das target-Attribut verwenden, da es in HTML5 wieder erlaubt ist.

Darf man external als Wert für rel nun nicht mehr in HTML5 verwenden?

In HTML5 darf man rel-Werte nutzen, die in der Spezifikation selbst oder auf der Seite <http://microformats.org/wiki/existing-rel-values> (mit dem Status „Proposed“ oder „Ratified“) stehen. Und ebenda ist external (als proposed) aufgeführt:

Indicates that the referenced document is not part of the same site as the current document.
